The CCMS Petawawa would like to introduce Ms. Kelly Rico, our new Conflict Management Practitioner (CMP) and a Restorative Practitioner (RP) for Central Region (Ontario). She joined our team in January 2021 and has found working with the CAF/DND invigorating.

Kelly has been in the field of mediation, restorative justice since 2009. She specializes in restorative practices for sexual harm and works from a trauma-informed lens. She developed her specialty with Community Justice Initiatives of Kitchener-Waterloo, facilitating dialogue in instances of sexual harm, co-facilitating weekly accountability and reintegration peer support groups for People Who Offended Sexually (PWOS), and Healing Circles (HCs) for survivors of sexual harm.

Kelly was part of a two-year national initiative to address and prevent gender-based violence (GBV) at post-secondary institutions in Canada. She co-authored a survivor-based framework that was just published in September 2021.

Kelly has worked with Ryerson University’s Academic Integrity Office, facilitating dialogue in academic misconduct cases and with Peacebuilders International, designing and facilitating accountability circles for youth involved with the criminal justice system.

Kelly received an MA in Human Security and Peacebuilding from Royal Roads University in 2020. She completed a Certificate in Conflict Analysis and Mediation from Conrad Grebel University College 2012 and a Diploma in Restorative Justice from Queen’s University 2010. Volunteer experiences include board membership with the Canadian Chapter of Mediators Beyond Borders International, and teaching Zen meditation in prison.

As a CMP, Kelly engages parties in a joint search for a win-win solution. CMPs are impartial and provide voluntary and confidential consultation, to assess options for conflict resolution. These include Facilitation, Mediation, Conflict Coaching, and Group Intervention. A CMP will help repair relationships, improve morale and encourage party control over the outcome. Kelly also provides training and briefings in Conflict Resolution, including Resolving Conflict Effectively (3-day) and Conflict Management for Leaders (2-day).
