Although the official National Cupcake Day™ was held on Feb. 26, the efforts of the Ontario SPCA Renfrew County Animal Centre’s staff and volunteers, and all the businesses, organizations, schools and inviduals who supported their efforts continued for a of number weeks after, raising more than $21,000, the most money ever raised for the Renfrew County event. Garrison PDEEAG hosts a Taste of Diversity lunch series
With 2 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group in high readiness, the Petawawa Diversity and Employment Equity Advisory Group (PDEEAG) put the Diversity Festival on hold for the year.

Garrison Petawawa personnel honour Humboldt Broncos on “Jersey Day”
Canadians across the country were encouraged to wear sports jerseys on Thursday, April 12 to show support for the victims of the deadly Humboldt Broncos bus crash on April 6. The initiative #JerseysforHumboldt was proposed on Facebook by a group of hockey parents in British Columbia as a way to honour the junior hockey team from Saskatchewan.

April is the Month of the Military Child”
With April being the Month of the Military Child, I would like to take the time to recognize and honour the children of our Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) members, across our bases, units and brigades, for their resilience and sacrifice. Many children of our women and men in uniform face unique challenges such as frequent moves and leaving behind schools, friends and teams. As our soldiers prepare for upcoming deployments and postings, whether at home or abroad, we need to ensure support and understanding for our children during these stressful times.

Earth Day 22 April 2018: End Plastic Pollution
Earth Day is an annual event that is celebrated globally every April 22nd to demonstrate support for environmental protection. Earth day originated in 1970 in the United States of America in order to honour the Earth and the concept of peace. Originally it was first celebrated on March 21st, the first day of spring. The day was proposed by peace activist John McConnell at a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) event. It became an international event in 1990 and involved over 141 nations. The first Canadian Earth Day was held on September 11th in 1980.

Security Awareness Tips
What’s the big deal? ...if I don’t use the standardized signature block? The recipient could very likely delete it, thinking it is spam or report it as a phishing attack. TBS requires that you use a standardized signature block for identification and to reduce questions about credibility of the email. Your signature block will be the only way for someone to identify what department you work for.

Planned Poweer Outages April 24 and 25
Real Property Operations Detachment Petawawa will be conducting planned electrical power shut-downs on 24 and 25 April 18 in order to perform upgrades to Garrison high voltage distribution infrastructure.  The shut-down will be 0600 hrs until approximately 1700 hrs.

Hockey meets figure skating in PSC first Battle of the Blades
Fourteen local hockey players discovered whether their skills on the ice could be translated into figure skating.As part of the Petawawa Skating Club’s (PSC) inaugural Battle of the Blades, these athletes were paired with 14 veteran figure skaters and put to the test on March 28.

Valour JK-12 School’s 18th Annual Thomas Sterling Memorial Student Teacher Hockey Game
Every year for the past eighteen years, on a beautiful spring day, staff and students of Valour JK-12 School (formerly General Panet High School) have been gathering at the Petawawa Civic Centre for a hockey game that features the graduating class versus the teachers.

Ottawa Valley Thunder Midgets Win Provincial Championship
The Ottawa Valley Midget Thunder girls hockey team capped off a memorable 2017-18 season by winning Gold at the Midget A Provincial Championships this past weekend in Toronto.

Celebrating Easter with the PMFRC
The Easter Bunny made an early appearance at the Petawawa Military Family Resource Centre (PMFRC). He hopped in on March 27 at the South Side Community Centre. Once more hundreds of kids took part in the crafts, egg hunt, treats and activities. The egg-cellent activities were made possible by a legion of volunteers.
