Those looking for a fresh, healthy vegan option can find that at A New Leaf Food Experience in Petawawa.

The restaurant offers a completely from- scratch plant-based menu, with nearly everything made on location. The are proud to say that the only thing they freeze is their ice cream.

It is a passion project as much as it is a business.

When realizing that there were no restaurant options in town to fit their palate, co-owners Trista Rowe and Chris Ellis knew they had to open one themselves. “People here are very health conscious and they want more variety,” said Rowe. “So when we had this opportunity, we jumped on it.”

A grand opening was held on June 24 and residents came out to try some free samples. Mayor Bob Sweet attended the event, welcoming them to the business community. “From what I hear, people are very enthusiastic,” said Sweet.

Ellis was primarily in charge of the menu, and created it based on things that he loved to eat, and knows will be popular. He has also collected a few recipes that are sure to intrigue such as a jalapeno-peach soup. “You try to Google it and you really can’t find much,” said Ellis. “The flavour profile is out there for similar stuff but I haven’t seen it.”

They work with local farmers to use the best products available and keep the philosophy that the restaurant is an extension of their own kitchen, their lifestyle and what they want to see in the world.

A New Leaf Food Experience is located on 1049 Victoria St.
