Gourd-looking characters will soon appear in front of Petawawa homes and businesses during the Petawawa Ramble featuring Pumpkin Folks.

These Pumpkin Folks are whimsical and fun, perfectly encapsulating the joy of the harvest season, and the activities held during the Ramble will reflect the autumnal mood while maintaining safety for all participants.
Organized as an opportunity for people to explore the town and enjoy the fall splendour, the Ramble will be officially held on Oct. 14 to 17. The residential Pumpkin Folk will be popping up in the days leading up to the event, however, to give residents a good reason to explore their neighbourhoods.

“What better way to see their community, see the changing colours and meet neighbours and participate in all sorts of activities while supporting local businesses,” said Christine Mitchell, Economic Development Officer at Town of Petawawa. “It’s just a really great time.”

Though many people would decorate their homes and businesses for fun, it is also a contest with fabulous prizes and bragging rights. RE/MAX Pembroke Realty Ltd. Broker Cindy Sell is sponsoring the residential displays, McKie Pools and Spas is sponsoring the business Pumpkin Folk displays, while Mike’s Hardware and Doors and So Much More! is sponsoring the entire event. Streets or neighbourhoods with five or more decorated homes may also win a pizza party.

“So it will be fun that neighbours can encourage each other,” said Mitchell.

New this year is the Photographic Nature Walk and Family Portrait Sessions. Five beautiful vignettes will be arranged in public where a photographer will be ready to take portraits of families. It is organized by the Petawawa Employment Services, and people must register ahead of time. It’s a chance to capture some amazing memories.

“We encourage people to ramble about and book their sessions,” said Mitchell. “Though we have asked the photographers to leave some open spaces.

“We are really focusing on having a lot more activities,” she added. “We want to take advantage of all the really great things that we have going on.”

Children’s activities will be set up at the Kin Hut near the Petawawa Civic Centre. Ultimate Werewolf will be at the Petawawa Heritage Village that Friday, hosted by Looking Glass Toys and Games. The next day, the Village will open its doors for its own display of Pumpkin Folk and fall activities. A pig roast will also be available at Hyska’s Your Independent Grocer on the 16th.

More will be revealed as the schedule is officially set.

“A lot of businesses are going to be doing events, but we don’t have the full scope yet,” said Mitchell.
Residents who wish to participate in the decorating contest must sign up before Sept 24.
