WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THERE ARE NO MORE VOLUNTEERS?
What will happen when no one wants to volunteer? Our service clubs will most likely close down as the people that are volunteering their time are getting older and cannot keep doing all that needs to be done. If the Clubs are no longer able to raise money for different charities, where will the money come from? There would be no donations to the food banks, no support for our veterans or disabled children. Your costs for children who like to play sports and count on help from service clubs would increase because there are no clubs to support them. The playgrounds that your children go to would most likely not be there.
Why not just take a bit of time to think about just what our service clubs are doing for your community? Do you go to the food bank when you are short of food and do you get a Christmas hamper with gifts for your children? Do you need help to send a child to summer camp or to a sport? A child needs a special bed, chair or a wheelchair and you go to a service club for help? You had a house fire and lost everything. Where did you go for help? You most likely went to one of the service clubs. A child wants to go on a special school trip but needs money to go. Where did you go? Oh yes, to a service club. But how sad it would be if there were no more service clubs to help because there are no volunteers.
Well, I have the answer for you. Join a service club. Believe in giving back by helping those who need help. Our Civitan Club is just one of the many service clubs that are helping make life a bit easier for others. Do you know that the Greater Petawawa Civitan Club is looking for volunteers to help at their bingo and other events they have? There is no cost to you to come and join us; all you have to do is work the bingo or help in some other way. We hold a meeting once a month, every second Wednesday at 7 p.m. If you would like to find out more about Civitan, come and see us at the bingo or at our meeting.
You say you are retired and want to travel, well you can still do that. You may find you have more time than you know what to do with and would like to have something to do. Do you know that some of our Civitan members are in their 80s and 90s and are still volunteering their time? It keeps them young at heart and they enjoy getting out to be with others.
I can also tell you we have people who work every day and still have time to be Civitan members and enjoy every minute they are helping others. We invite all our members in of the Canadian Armed Forces to come and find out what we are doing for them and see if they can be of support to Civitan in any way. Some of us in the Greater Petawawa Civitan Club are ex-service members and some are still serving.
If you would like to speak to a Civitan member about Civitan you may call: Civitan Brian Miner at 613-687-4503, Civitan Darlene Lambert at 613-735-6069 or Civitan Marie Arnold at 613-687-8463, we would be happy to talk to you about Civitan. God Bless you all.
